There are many resources that are offered for the homeless in Southern California, but there is a lack of resources and housing specifically for older adults that are homeless. There are some shelters and food pantries in Southern California that help this population, with programs that offer those in need better nutrition rather than starvation and a temporary stay. Homelessness is connected to poor health along with a report of mental health issues in older adults which makes for 44% of the population. Not only does homelessness heavily impact older adults but also families and children which make up for 70% of the homeless population.
Resources for Homeless Older Adults and Families:
- CALWorks Homeless Assistance: CalWorks helps families that are in financial need as well as housing needs. There are emergency shelters that are listed on a PDF sheet online which allows people to see the eligibility requirements for various programs. Anyone is eligible to apply through the link offered on the CDSS website. The site also has instructions on how to apply.
- CalFresh: CalFresh is offered as a Supplemental Assistance Program which helps those who qualify in the lower income communities and families though giving monthly food benefits every month.CalFresh is for low income individuals who meet requirements similar to typical federal eligibility rules. Applications can be submitted at the following link GetCalFresh.
- Southern California Rental Housing Association: The SoCal RHA allows homeless individuals to participate in incentive programs, and receive most needed products, services. Homeless individuals in Southern California can take advantage of multiple resources in counties such as San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County, Imperial and even specific populations such as veterans.
The following are steps that can help a person who is currently or at risk for being homeless and are unsure where to start. All programs have different policies regarding how to receive food and shelter or qualifications such as finding income or a maximum time frame for shelter services. It is important to keep in mind that finding a program isn’t an easy fix, rather it is important to temporarily use resources until stability has been established.
How to get Help:
- Reaching out to resources in your local city or residence offer plenty of resources such as food, shelter and programs online or in city offices.
- Find shelter before reaching out to homeless resources or call 2-1-1.
- Find homeless resources that will help establish temporary housing.
