Memory loss can be very common throughout the aging process of older adults. Memory loss is when someone is unusually forgetful and is unable to remember memories, events, holidays, or even present situations. Individuals with Dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease, Korsakoff’s Syndrome, Parkinson’s Disease, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and many more are more likely to suffer from memory loss. Oftentimes, individuals who suffer from memory loss are categorized as incapable even though they can still perform regular tasks and live a productive life.
The SPARK! Program focuses on providing people with memory loss with a supportive environment and an engaging community. SPARK! is known as a cultural program for individuals with memory loss (early to mid-stage) and their care partners. The purpose of this program is to keep their program participants engaged in workshops, art activities, music, and dance programs, cooking lessons, stimulating conversations, etc. All the experiences that are provided within SPARK! were created to inspire creativity and give these individuals a new outlook on life.
Some of the many things that participants might take part in include:
- Hands-on art making
- Poetry
- Singing & other Music related activities
- Visual art discussion
- Drama performances
- Learning about culture & nature
- Storytelling
- Dementia station (dress up & make-up station)
SPARK! has allowed many individuals to regain a sense of purpose and view life in a new light. The conversations and discussions they have with staff or volunteers gives them the opportunity to express their feelings and emotions about anything that is going on in their mind. All the activities and events that the program provides allows these participants to escape all their problems in the real world for just a little bit to focus on themselves and their wellbeing.
The SPARK! program is located within the US within many different museums, nature centers, cultural venues and even in galleries. The program tends to last 60-90 minutes and is limited to 10-25 participants per each group.
SPARK! programs are currently only located throughout Wisconsin, Minnesota, Tennessee, and Colorado. Multiple locations are available in these states.
