A Seniors Guide to Social Media use: The Benefits & Do’s and Don’ts

Social media usage has skyrocketed in the past decade. As technology has advanced, some users are completely dependent on social media to help them complete daily tasks. Unfortunately, seniors are less likely to use social media unless they are taught how. Social media has the ability to help improve the lives of seniors and can potentially save their life in an emergency. Here are some benefits of social media use and helpful tips for seniors.

Benefits of Social Media Use Among Seniors

Stay connected

The use of social media can help seniors keep connected to family and friends, and prevent social isolation. Skype, FaceTime, and Zoom are video chat platforms that allow a person to see an individual face to face and chat live. This alone can make for a more meaningful and intimate chat. Also, seniors can keep connected with their community by joining Facebook groups, forums, or blogs to stay updated about events or news.

Make new friends

Social media allows users to branch out and make new friends that they would not have met otherwise. The use of Facebook or community forums like Reddit allow you to meet a lot of new people who may have similar interests as you.

Keep entertained at home

Facebook and YouTube provide a lot of content that caters to many different audiences. There are also apps such as Netflix and Hulu that have movies and television shows that are not otherwise accessible.

Learn new things

Social media platforms allow many avenues for learning. One can learn new recipes, gardening tips, and adapted exercises through informative videos on YouTube. Also, seniors can schedule online for medications, groceries, and other essential goods to be delivered to their home with applications such as Postmates and Instacart.

Social Media Do’s & Don’ts

DO ask for help. If in need of assistance, always ask for help to properly navigate through social media outlets with confidence and precaution. There are accessibility settings on smartphones and tablets that allow for text sizes to be bigger and the use of voice control to help with commands and typing.

DO have a safe place such as a notebook or note pad application to put down usernames, email address, and passwords used on social media accounts for reference. It avoids time and frustration trying to remember them.

DO NOT cyberbully. Please be kind to others and avoid any negativity online. There are features that allow users to block and delete other users, as well as, disable comments if needed.

DO NOT put personal information out on social media. There is a need for privacy and protection against hackers and identity theft. If any websites or pop ups are asking for personal information be hesitant, do more research about website, and if unsure exit the website to be safe.
