As many of us already know, alcohol is a dangerous drug which should only be consumed in careful moderation. Regardless of age, genetics, and health, everyone should be aware of the short and long-term repercussions of drinking alcohol. While alcohol affects everyone differently, the bottom line is its dangerous and unhealthy. Especially when aging, bodies handle alcohol differently making them much more of a threat and health factor to consider.
While an occasional glass of red wine can provide antioxidants, drinking should never be taken lightly. Even a small amount of alcohol can lead to dangerous situations. Aside from loosening inhibitions, drinking impairs a person’s judgment, coordination, and reaction time. For seniors, this can increase the risk of falls, household accidents, and car crashes. According to the National Institute on Aging, alcohol is a factor in 60 percent of falls, 30 percent of suicides, 40 percent of crashes and burns, and 50 percent of drownings.
In older adults, too much alcohol can lead to balance problems and falls, which can result in hip or arm fractures and other injuries. Studies show that the rate of hip fractures in older adults increases with alcohol use. Bones become thinner and weaker making them more likely to break or fracture when falling.
Maintaining one’s drinking habits despite aging can strongly contribute to the development of degenerative diseases in old age. While it’s always beneficial to minimize alcohol intake, this should especially be considered in old age. Drinking too much alcohol over a long time can lead to cancer, liver damage, immune system disorders, and brain damage. Other health conditions like osteoporosis, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, ulcers, memory loss and mood disorders.
In addition, alcohol misuse can strain relationships with family members, friends, and others. At the extreme, heavy drinking can contribute to domestic violence and child abuse.
