When it comes to deciding whether an assisted living facility is the best option for you or your loved ones, it is important to weigh the pros and cons before making any decisions. Let’s debunk a few popular myths pertaining to life in these facilities.
Myth #1: Assisted living is the same thing as a nursing home
Although similar, assisted living facilities and nursing homes are actually two different options. Assisted living facilities provide long-term housing and care for older adults who need assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), whereas a nursing home is a higher level of care for older adults who don’t require hospitalization but do need help with day-to-day medical care along with help with ADLs. These two facilities are just a few long-term care options that are available.
Myth #2: Assisted living is too expensive
Although it may look expensive when comparing the cost, the costs associated with assisted living facilities are all-inclusive for housing, meals, transportation, recreational activities, and medical aid. Meanwhile the costs of staying at home will include anywhere from property taxes to utility bills along with groceries and additional bills for the necessary in-home healthcare. There are also multiple programs to help finance assisted living through Medicare, assisted living waiver programs, or other options. This calculator is a great tool to help compare costs for long term care.
Myth #3 I’ll lose my independence
On the contrary, an assisted living facility will enable a more independent lifestyle. The purpose of these facilities is to provide ADL assistance immediately so one can continue on with their day-to-day life. Residents can decorate their rooms however they like, participate in activities of their liking, and even have visitors just as if they were at home. Residents can also continue to live a life outside of the facility, with daily errands or even vacations, and staff will care for their belongings while away.
Myth #4 Living at an assisted living facility will be lonely and dull
As previously mentioned, residents are able to have their family and friends visit at the facility. When there are no visitors, there are plenty of other residents to socialize with. Also, some facilities may accommodate your pets for extra companionship. These facilities usually have entertainment directors who coordinate a wide variety of activities such as painting, karaoke, movie nights, and game nights just to name a few of the hundred different activities that are widely available and tailored to each facility.
Now that we have debunked these myths, you are closer to a decision about assisted living facilities. However, it is important to keep in mind that not all facilities are the same and it is important to schedule a tour of each place in order to see which would be a great fit.
