Life presents itself with hindering circumstances, causing adults to lose some of their speed and agility due to injury, strokes, or arthritis, just to name a few. Despite these physical challenges and limited mobility, there are many different ways that seniors can still be involved and participate in activities that would keep their minds sharp and their relationships healthy. The following includes some of these activities like different forms of puzzles, art, or utilizing new technologies to help keep seniors and their minds’ engaged and stimulated.
- Board games:
Board games are a great way not only to pass the time, but can also serve as a way to exercise the mind. Board games are great for higher level strategic thinking, problem solving and can even protect against cognitive decline.
- Arts and crafts:
Creative outlets like drawing, painting, and/or sculpting are great ways to keep the mind active while benefiting emotional and mental health. Studies show that these activities are shown to reduce stress and provide an individual with a higher self efficacy and a sense of purpose. - Light exercise:
Although mobility is the main obstacle, light movements can help with flexibility and reduce joint pain. Activities such as light yoga, where one can do simple dynamic movements such as arm circles, arm raises, and shoulder rolls can go a long way to help with these mobility issues. - Tend Plants:
Although having a garden requires time and physical activities such as bending down and picking up materials, some people resort to having a few select potted plants inside their homes which they water and tend to daily. Studies show that plants can improve air quality in homes and can boost mood and productivity for owners. - Computer games and technology:
With technology making advancements every day, computers and smartphones are becoming extremely accessible for everyone. Although seniors aren’t the most tech savvy, those who are patient enough and are able to take advantage of these tools are introduced to a whole different world with help from the internet. People can access these programs on almost any device even from the comfort of their own beds. This can benefit even the most immobile individual by stimulating problem solving skills, teaching technological skills, improving communication skills and enhancing hand eye coordination. With advancements such as Virtual Reality (VR), seniors immerse themselves into a whole world of possibilities.
As one’s mobility and cognitive skills decrease, it is important to keep the mind sharp through different activities. Not only do these activities help pass the time but they also benefit mental, physical and social health, strengthening relationships with their other peers and family members.
