Green House Homes: A New Way of Senior Living

Feelings of loneliness, isolation, boredom, and a loss of control are common among older individuals, especially those in long-term care facilities. The Green House Project, a non-profit organization, aims to eliminate these negative experiences by introducing Green House Homes—a new type of senior living that promotes autonomy, community, and a natural way of life.

Green House Homes are small, self-contained residential environments designed for older adults. Unlike traditional long-term care facilities, these homes foster a sense of independence by offering private rooms and bathrooms for each resident, as well as shared spaces such as living rooms and dining areas that feel like a true home. Residents can easily move around these areas and enjoy outdoor spaces that are accessible and filled with natural sunlight.

One key aspect of Green House Homes is their focus on creating an intimate living environment. Rather than housing large numbers of residents, these homes are designed to accommodate 8-12 residents at most, forming small communities where residents can build close relationships with their peers. This intimate setting allows for more personalized care and fosters a sense of belonging.

In addition to promoting autonomy and community, Green House Homes also advocate for green living. These homes incorporate gardens, plants, and outdoor areas that help create a free and natural environment for the residents. Social activities are highly encouraged, ensuring that residents have the opportunity to engage with others and stay socially active.

One of the standout features of Green House Homes is the role of the “Shahbazim“—caregivers whose responsibilities go beyond basic care. Shahbazim are trained not only to manage clinical and home care tasks but also to build meaningful relationships with the residents. They assist with everything from cooking and cleaning to medication management, and most importantly, they support residents in their social and emotional well-being.

The Green House model is revolutionizing senior living by prioritizing the comfort, freedom, and happiness of its residents. With small communities, green living, and compassionate caregivers, these homes represent the future of senior care, providing a living environment where older adults can thrive in comfort and dignity.
