As individuals age, some may develop intellectual or developmental disabilities and medical conditions that require special care. Conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or Dementia can lead to confusion, fear, and disorientation, often causing older adults to wander in search of something familiar. This behavior not only worries their loved ones but can also bring harm to the individuals themselves. Fortunately, the Safe Return program, created by the Alzheimer’s Association, provides crucial support in these situations.
The Safe Return program is a nationwide initiative designed to help locate, identify, and reunite dementia patients with their loved ones. Once enrolled, local law enforcement, community members, and volunteers are provided with important information about the individual, such as contact details, photographs, health information, and identifying characteristics. These details allow responders to quickly and effectively assist a wandering person and bring them back to safety.
Key benefits of the Safe Return program include:
- National Information/Photo Database: A detailed computerized database available upon enrollment.
- Local Chapter Support: Assistance from family, caregivers, and community members during a crisis.
- Wandering Behavior Information and Training: Educational resources to help families and others recognize dementia symptoms, prevent wandering, and respond when necessary.
- Personalized Identification Products: Engraved bracelets, necklaces, key chains, and more to help identify individuals in need of help.
- 24-Hour Toll-Free Crisis Line and Fax Alert Notification System: Immediate support for urgent situations.
Today, the Alzheimer’s Association has partnered with the MedicAlert Foundation to offer the 24/7 Wandering Support service. To join, individuals must purchase a MedicAlert membership plan and an identification accessory. The protection plans vary in price, with options starting at $24.99 per year. Accessories range from $10 to $1,449.99, depending on the style and material. Medicare Advantage plans or other health insurance may cover some or all of the costs of the medical ID accessories if documented as a requirement by a physician.
The safety and well-being of your loved ones are invaluable, and joining the Safe Return or 24/7 Wandering Support program can provide peace of mind. With a variety of options available, this membership is a small price to pay for the protection it offers.
