Gardening for Seniors: Tips and Tricks

Gardening is one of the most rewarding and peaceful activities a person can partake in. But should we modify gardening as we age? The answer is simply, yes. Gardening can be a very physical activity with all the bending, squatting, and pulling. It is a good idea to know one’s physical limitations when starting to garden. When gardening feels like it is pushing personal limitations, modifying moves, or adding supportive items can help. Gardening injuries are very common and can range from pulling muscles, slipped discs, bursitis and even shoulder impingement. To avoid these injuries, here are five tips and tricks to modify some gardening habits! 

  1. Warm up

It is always a good idea to stretch the body before attempting physical activities. By doing a 10-minute warm up of the joints and muscles, it prepares them for the various movements the body will be doing. Once the body is properly warmed up through stretching, it is time to start gardening. Don’t forget a cold glass of water to avoid overheating and keep hydrated! 

Here is a suggested 10-min warm-up for older adults. 

  1. Protection from the sun

We all know that the sun can be overwhelming and harmful. Therefore, it is important to be protected from the sun’s rays. The CDC recommends sun safety by using shade, sunglasses, hats, protective clothing, and sunscreen! 

  1. Garden smarter, not harder

Getting the right tools and setting up the gardening area are very important steps. A tip for avoiding extraneous movements can be to spend a little more money on better made tools. It is also recommended to raise up the gardening beds as well as getting larger pots and planters to avoid awkward bending. 

  1. Glove up!

Good gloves are vital for safety and prevention of injury. Plants can poke and inflict injuries that can include cuts and abrasions. This can lead to possible infections and irritations, so getting a pair of well-fitted gardening gloves is needed.

Remember, gardening is meant to be a fun and peaceful pastime. If gardening feels too hard and exhausting, it is a good idea to scale back. Gardening is meant for pleasure so if it feels too difficult, help is available.
