How to Keep Your Parents Independent

As your parents age, they may find themselves unable perform once-easy tasks and requiring the assistance of others. Due to cost or a lack of need, many seniors are reluctant to enter a nursing home or assisted living community. The main reasons though, are that most individuals want to retain their independence and feel most comfortable at home. However, being independent entails having all their emotional and physical health needs met, so that they won’t require constant care or supervision.

Here are some ways to help your loved-one maintain independence and quality of life:

  • Make a list of your parent’s , physicians, etc. and keep all their contact information in one place.
  • Remodel the home to promote safety, such as adding hand-rails, lower shelves, or home security systems.
  • Set up home delivery services for food and medication to reduce the need to drive
  • Give your loved one a personal emergency response system (PERS), so they can call for help if they experience an emergency.
  • Help arrange trips with community events and activities
  • Hire an in-home care professional to help your parent with daily activities and errands.
