What Are Your Expectations for Long-Term Care?

When approaching one’s golden years, living alone can be increasingly difficult because activities of daily living (ADLs) become increasingly more difficult to navigate. Getting older doesn’t automatically mean we will become dependent on others. According to a 2016 report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, “As people age, they are increasingly likely to develop a physical or cognitive impairment that impacts their ability to function independently”.

Where do you expect to receive support when you are enter your golden years? According to a survey by the SCAN foundation of 1500 seniors, 8% of those surveyed said they expected their younger relatives to play “a significant role” in their long-term care. 32% said they expected those relatives to help with some things, but not a lot. And 35% said they don’t expect any help from children, grandchildren or other younger relatives. In reality, however, 70% of seniors will need help after the age of 65.
