We May Finally Know What Causes Alzheimer’s – and How to Stop It

Alzheimer’s disease affects an estimated 5.7 million Americans.  A whopping 1 in 10 Americans over the age of 65 has Alzheimer’s disease. As the lifespan of humans has increased, dementia has skyrocketed to become the fifth biggest cause of death worldwide. Scientists remain puzzled as the cause of the disease…Until now.  After years of research, scientists may have found what causes Alzheimer’s and how to stop it. Even more interesting, we may be closer to a cure than we previously thought!

David Reynolds of the Alzheimer’s UK charity reported “we may finally have found the long-elusive cause of Alzheimer’s disease: Porphyromonas gingivalis, the key bacteria also found in chronic gum disease”. Finding a link between these two diseases has narrowed researchers to a possible antidote. “[sic] Good news is that a drug that blocks the main toxins of P. gingivalis is entering major clinical trials this year, and research published today shows it might stop and even reverse Alzheimer’s. There could even be a vaccine” (Science Advances).

Studies conducted on mice with dementia have revealed the antidote’s ability to destroy proteins which creates the plaque formed in both gums and brains. Though this goal would likely take years to get FDA approval, it’s still important to realize how many people could be saved by this treatment.
